The Giant Cross in Armenia – 33 Meters Tal

The Holly Cross
A giant cross made of 1711 small crosses combined together to form one large cross. The height of the cross is 33 meters, and the number 1711 symbolizes the years that passed since Armenia adopted Christianity as the official religion of the state.

The height of 33 meters symbolizes the age of Jesus Christ when he was crucified. At the base of the giant cross, from four directions, there are concrete crosses with a height of 301 cm, symbolizing the year 301 AD, the year when Armenia adopted Christianity as the official state religion.

Every year on October 20, a new small cross is added after being consecrated in the nearby Sanctuary of Faith, during a celebration attended by citizens and officials.

The giant cross is installed on a hill overlooking the Armenian Alphabet Monument, on the highway connecting Yerevan and Aparan. The hill is located in a triangle surrounded by Mount Ara to the east, Mount Aragats to the west, and Mount Ararat to the south.

All the crosses are made of hollow metal pipes with different diameters. Therefore, when you stand near them on a windy day or during strong winds, you will hear different sounds caused by air passing through the hollow pipes of different diameters.
