Colored Easter Eggs: History and Decoration Traditions – The Legend of Paschal Eggs

Colored Easter Eggs

Colored Easter eggs are one of the most important symbols of Easter for Christians in many countries around the world. Decorating eggs is one of the oldest Easter traditions. Colored eggs are often given as gifts during the holiday and are also used to decorate homes and Easter tables.

History of Colored Easter Eggs

Colored Easter Eggs

Colored Easter eggs are often presented as gifts during Easter. According to ancient traditions, boiled eggs were naturally dyed using plant-based colors. Today, chocolate eggs wrapped in colorful foil shaped like eggs have become popular, in addition to handmade wooden eggs and plastic eggs filled with candy.

Colored eggs are still used in Easter traditions across Europe, America, and many countries around the world. Eggs symbolize abundance, new life, and the Resurrection. Red eggs in Easter tradition symbolize the blood of Jesus Christ.

Origin of the Egg Coloring Tradition

Many sources indicate that the tradition of coloring Easter eggs began among early Christians in Mesopotamia. It later spread through the Orthodox Church in Russia and Siberia, and then through the Catholic and Protestant churches in Europe.

Some studies also suggest that decorating eggs dates back to very ancient times, as decorated ostrich eggs dating back more than 60,000 years have been found in Africa and ancient Egypt.

Ways to Color Easter Eggs

During boiling, onion skins can be used to give eggs a natural red color. You can also place parsley leaves or small plants on the egg, wrap it with thin cloth, and boil it with onion skins. After removing the leaf, its shape will remain printed on the egg beautifully.

Uses of Decorated Easter Eggs

In many countries, homes are decorated with colored Easter eggs. On Easter day, children greet each other by saying “Christ is Risen,” then they crack the eggs and eat them.

People also play the egg cracking game, where each person holds an egg and hits it against another person’s egg. The person whose egg does not break is considered lucky for that year.

In some countries, small trees are decorated with colored Easter eggs, similar to Christmas trees.
