What is Areni Wine Festival?
The Areni Wine Festival is an annual wine festival held on the first Saturday of October in Areni village. It is considered one of the most important tourism events in Armenia and a major celebration of Armenian wine culture.
Why is the festival held in Areni village?
The first Areni Wine Festival was held in 2009. In 2010, the discovery of the oldest known winery in Areni Cave gave the festival international importance and made the region famous worldwide.
Areni Cave is located in southeastern Armenia in the Vayots Dzor region near the Arpa River. In this cave, archaeologists discovered the oldest wine press in the world, as well as the oldest leather shoe ever found.
